Ep. 23. 02: Understanding CrossFit

Originally published in April 2007, Foundations:

The CrossFit prescription is “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement.” No aspect of functional movements is more important than their capacity to move large loads over long distances, and to do so quickly.

The methodology that drives CrossFit is entirely empirical. We believe that meaningful statements about safety, efficacy, and efficiency, the three most important and interdependent facets of any fitness program, can be supported only by measurable, observable, repeatable facts; i.e., data. We call this approach “evidence-based fitness.” The CrossFit methodology depends on full disclosure of methods, results, and criticisms, and we’ve employed the Internet (and various intranets) to support these values. Our charter is open source, making co-developers out of participating coaches, athletes, and trainers through a spontaneous and collaborative online community. CrossFit is empirically driven, clinically tested, and community developed.

Ep. 22.03: Foundations

Originally published in April 2002, Foundations is one of those articles that CrossFit coaches should read and reread frequently. In many ways, it’s the original “beginner’s guide” to CrossFit, and the nuggets contained within it will help every CrossFit coach articulate the finer points of our program to any athlete. Ep. 22.02: Low-Carb and CrossFit: Delauer, TDC, and Mike G

In this interview, Thomas DeLauer, Dave Castro, and Mike Giardina discuss performance on a low-carbohydrate diet and Thomas and Dave’s 35-mile ruck. The first part of the video digs into the appropriateness of a low-carbohydrate diet while trying to perform well in CrossFit. Dave Castro shares some of his own experiences training on a low-carb diet, explaining how his performance didn’t change much but he felt much better overall. Thomas DeLauer provides some strategies for using carbohydrates effectively to improve performance while on a low-carbohydrate diet, but he also explains that most people entering the CrossFit gym could benefit from strict adherence to a low-carb approach to improve their metabolic flexibility.

The second half of the interview digs deep into Thomas and Dave’s 35-mile ruck while fasted and wearing a 35-lb pack. The two of them go back and forth as they discuss the dietary protocol prior to starting the ruck, the plan to avoid cramping, the science behind different “schools” of fasting, ketone production and its impact on performance, and some of the mental and physiological responses to doing an enduring event without taking in any calories.

Bennett began working out in the gym as part of his training for the U.S. Ski Team, but the training regimens with the team eventually led to injury. After developing a bulging disc, he decided to look into other options. A friend brought him into Park City CrossFit in Utah, and the rest is history.

“I got absolutely smashed by a soccer mom,” Bennett says about his first CrossFit experience. At that point, he knew CrossFit training was something he needed to pursue. He started training in his hometown gym, CrossFit Blizzard, in Truckee, California.

“This is how you train for any sport in the entire world,” he says.
